Even in my state, Montana, the "progressives" are infecting our political process with "multiculturalism" (not live and let live), "global warming", and some-more-equal-than-others (gays, illegal immigrants). As you mention, support "builds" for the measures you listed: "safe foods act", ex post facto laws, and "temporary suspensions of liberty".

This is how Hitler, Mussolini, and the Democratic Peoples Republic of California started out. It is how the UK has become Britanistan. It is how South Africa declined precipitously after the "progressive" 1994 election.

But there is hope for keeping us the USA, rather than the USSA. The Teaparty Movement, Ron Paul and Senator Jim DeMint, and challenging the Party cadre on every one of their agitprop lies comes to mind.
